Here's a list of ways you can get involved with DUMC missions and organizations sponsored by the church. For more information about the organizations listed, please see information provided on our webpage under international, regional and local missions.   • Description: Inner city mission work in Atlanta; participants will work in food pantry, serve homeless clients of mission, conduct minor repairs to facility.

    Baldwin County, AL (Habitat for Humanity)
    • DUMC Coordinator: Keith Bradford
    • 2010 Dates:
    • Description: One home will be constructed on Saturdays, Tuesdays and Thursdays over a six week period. Meals and refreshments will be provided for participants. People of all skills and skill levels (including construction and refreshment preparation and service) will be needed.
    • Participant Cost: Sweat equity and transportation.
     
    Baldwin County, AL (DUMC Thanksgiving Baskets)
    • DUMC Coordinators: Gary and Jean Wilson
    • 2010 Dates: Two weeks prior to Thanksgiving
    • Description: 2010 project will be similar to the one conducted in 2009 when over 50 DUMC members delivered 208 baskets containing fixin’s for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner to area families. Donations of food and volunteers will be needed to prepare and deliver baskets. DUMC members contributed over $4,500 in support of this effort.

    Individual Volunteer Opportunities 
    Local Missions
     
    Baldwin County, AL (Ecumenical Ministries)
    • DUMC Contact: George Mitchell
    • Volunteer OpportunitiesEmergency Aid Counselors- training is provided to equip volunteers to administer emergency financial aid to families in crisis. Volunteers usually work 9-11:30 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays, one day per month (or more if desired). Meals on Wheels Drivers- EMI currently has two routes: one in Spanish Ft. and one in Daphne. Each route currently has ten stops. Drivers pick up meals at Mercy Medical at 11 am and typically finish by noon. Additional drivers are needed for existing routes and an additional route would be opened in the Hwy 64 area if a sufficient number of drivers were available. Food Pantry- Volunteers stock shelves and fill food needs of clients requiring Emergency Aid and normally work one day per month from 9-11:30 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays.   Thrift Shop- Volunteers collect, sort and price goods. The Thrift Shop is open M-F from 10 am till 4:30 pm.
     
    Spanish Fort, AL (Prodisee Pantry)
    • DUMC Contact: Richard Hunt
    • Monday mornings, 8:30 to 11 a.m.: Workday when volunteers, sort, shelve and pre-box food items
    • Tuesday mornings, 8:30 to Noon: Volunteers needed to greet families, file applications, interview clients, bag and box groceries, stock shelves, assist clients to their cars, and secure community support through contributions.
    • 1st Monday of each month, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.: General work night
    • Wednesday evenings, 6 to 7:30 p.m.: General work night
    • Secretarial assistance: Needed weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

    • Home Repair Teams: Usually as an activity of the Community Enrichment Program, the Mission hosts volunteer work teams throughout the year, ranging in skill from high school groups to specific trades (carpenters, sheetrock finishers, etc.).
    • Meal Preparation and Service: Volunteer teams prepare and serve the evening meal to residents of McKemie Place. There is no set number of times to volunteer; it can be a one time service or some groups serve the same night each month. 
    • Disaster Relief: During time of disaster, volunteers work with the Mission and other organizations to provide relief
    • Tutors: Tutorial Program conducted at Taylor Park M-F from 4-5:30 pm
    Regional Missions

    International Missions

    • Short Term Assistants: STAs are needed in the field or Dallas offices for periods of 6 months to 2 years as Teachers and aides, I.T. Workers, Event Planners, Logistics coordinators and purchasing agents, Administrative Assistants, Multi-media specialists, Handymen (construction, mechanic, electrician), Desktop publishers, Print shop managers, Financial assistants/bookkeepers.
    • Summer Internships: begin with two weeks of pre-field training in Dallas, Texas, followed by eight weeks of field experience.
    • Long term service: PBT is has openings for a wide range of skills at PBT Teams in North Africa, the Republic of Guinea, Tanzania, Eurasia, Southeast Asia, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and North America.
